Beaches in Weymouth
Aside from Weymouth beach with its fine golden sands and endless attractions, there are a few other beaches in Weymouth worth visiting too.
Smallmouth Bay
Smallmouth Bay at Ferrybridge is another example of sandy beaches in Weymouth. This small sandy beach can be found at the Weymouth end of the Chesil beach causeway that connects Weymouth to Portland.
How to Get to Smallmouth Bay Beach
Smallmouth Bay can be reached along the Rodwell Trail or if visiting by car, there is the Chesil Beach carpark close by. Smallmouth beach is a lovely place to sit and relax and watch the activity in Portland Harbour. Kite surfing is a particularly popular activity in Portland harbour, and you will see plenty of this from the beach. Smallmouth bay beach gets pretty packed on a nice sunny day.
Newtons Cove
Newtons cove is a small cove found close to the Nothe gardens where it overlooks Portland Harbour and the breakwater forts. It can be considered one of the most beautiful areas of Weymouth and offers some of the best sights in Weymouth.
How to get to Newtons Cove
Walking away from the Old harbour, past the Brewers Quay and Hope Square, walk down to Newtons Road and you will find Newtons cove with its rockpools and a shingle beach.
This small shingle beach in Weymouth (on the opposite side of the harbour to Weymouth beach) is a popular spot in the summer where you can get away from the bustling crowds likely to be found on the main Weymouth beach.
From Newtons cove, you can see the Portland breakwater - one of the breakwaters that protects Portland Harbour and Portland Breakwater fort on the end of it. It is between one of these entrances to Portland Harbour that HMS Hood was sunk to protect against enemy submarines. You can also see the cliffs out towards Lulworth. A short but pleasant walk along the walkway that skirts the Nothe Gardens will take you round towards the Nothe Fort and stone pier.
The rockpools at Newtons Cove are full of wildlife the close by Nothe gardens are a great place to relax and have a picnic. If you follow the walk into the Nothe gardens, you can take the steps down to the harbour where you can walk along the stone pier or in the other direction back along Weymouth harbour, past the beautiful colourful fisherman's cottages of Weymouth old harbour and back towards the town.
Castle Cove Beach (or Sandsfoot Beach)
Castle cove beach is privately owned
and another of the sandy beaches in Weymouth. Castle Cove beach is alternately known as Sandsfoot cove/beach on behalf of it being close to the ruined Sandsfoot castle.
How to get to Castle Cove Beach
Castle Cove Beach can be found at the bottom of Old Castle Road in Weymouth where there is limited parking. The beach is actually inside Portland Harbour.
It is also close to one of Weymouths local sailing clubs. From Castle Cove beach you will be looking at the Portland Breakwater from the opposite side to where you would see it at Newtons Cove. On a clear sunny day, like the other beaches in Weymouth, Castle Cove beach is likely to be popular.
Quiet Beaches in Weymouth - Greenhill Beach and Preston Beach
As already mentioned, the large expanse of beach that runs from Weymouth pier to Bowleaze Cove is actually made up of 3 beaches - Weymouth Beach, Greenhill Beach and Preston Beach. The main Weymouth beach is full of attractions with fine golden sands and on a hot day, it gets extremely packed. If you are looking for quiet beaches in Weymouth, then head further along to the beaches at Greenhill and Preston, here the beaches are shingle and the water gets deep much quicker, but they also tend to be quieter than the main sandy beach.
