Tyneham Village is a truly unique place, a ghost village requisitioned for the war effort, life in this idyllic village was abruptly brought to an end and the villagers were never allowed to return. Today it is open on certain days through the year, it includes the restored schoolroom and church whilst the remaining cottages lie in ruins scattered around the village.
The Isles of Portland is connected to the mainland by a narrow strip. Famous for Portland stone of which many of the countries finest buildings are built. The island has been quarried for centuries, helping to shape its rugged landscape. Portland Bill and Church Ope Cove are amongst its many highlights.
The county town Dorchester is less than 10 miles inland. A bustling town with plenty of shops, restaurants and a couple of cinemas. A weekly market, museums, Maumsbury rings, Maiden castle and a walk alongside the River Frome come highly recommended.
West Bay is an ever popular place to visit, built around the harbour, theres a beach and steep walks up the cliffs to either side. Nearby is the town of Bridport with its shops, restaurants and museums.
Wareham is an ancient inland town, it features some ancient earthen walls, a beautiful quay on the river Frome and plenty to do. Nearby is the idyllic village of Corfe, below the ruined Corfe Castle and steam railway. Tyneham village and Lulworth are also closeby.
