Portland Harbour extends from Weymouth right across to Portland with Chesil Beach offering protection on one side and the Portland Breakwater on the other. The huge Portland harbour was once the Portland naval base but these days it is used by commercial vessels and pleasure seekers. There are a number of Portland sailing clubs offering seasonal moorings in Portland harbour, windsurfing is also a popular sport in Portland Harbour and due to its huge size, Portland harbour is also a popular stop off port for cruise liners. Because of its importance as a harbour, there have also been a number of forts built around Portland harbour throug the centuries, these include Sandsfoot Castle, Portland Castle, the Nothe Fort and the breakwater forts out on the Portland breakwater. The picture here shows a few sailing yachts from one of the Portland sailing clubs moored out in Portland harbour with Portland in the background. This picture is taken from the Rodwell trail which gives some fantastic views across Portland harbour.
