As one of the closest villages to Weymouth, the village of Osmington Mills is one of a number of lovely quaint places to visit near Weymouth to explore for a few hours. Not only does it have the White Horse to see, the village itself is beautiful, there are some fantastic views, a nice pub and a rocky beach.

History of the Osmington White Horse

The Osmington White Horse was carved into the hillside in 1808 in recognition of what King George III had done in helping to make Weymouth the fashionable resort to visit that it remains to this day.

King George III visited Weymouth on a number of occasions. Partly due to his love of this beautiful resort but also in a belief that the sea air and bathing in the clear calm waters had good health-giving properties.

A number of reminders of the Kings visits to Weymouth can be seen around the seafront, including the King George III statue on Weymouth seafront and closeby a replica bathing machine. The hillside carving shows the King riding away from Weymouth across the hills of Osmington. A legend is that the King was insulted that the sculpture showed him riding away from the resort and chose never to visit again, this is however unlikely as the Kings last visit to Weymouth was in 1805 (some 3 years before the carving was created).

Whether you choose to visit the Osmington White Horse close up or from afar on the seafront, keep an eye out for one of a number of things to see in Weymouth.
