Church Ope Cove Pirates Graveyard history
St Andrews church is the ruined remains of the first church on Portland and is located above Church Ope Cove. The church is more commonly known as the Church Ope Cove pirates graveyard due to one of the surviving monuments - a chest tomb having a skull and crossbones symbol on it, however for the age of the tombstone, this was a common symbol of death and is unlikely to be that of a pirate. The picture here is of the surviving bell tower archway, the archway is the best surviving remain of St Andrews church which through the centuries has been destroyed by landslips and French invading pirates.
